HYLAMIDE – Photography Foundation (transparent) Review & Swatch

Price: $20 CAD
Size: 30 mL
Shade: transparent

This product is extremely similar to the product I did my last review on – NIOD – photography fluid. For info on what photography fluid is please refer to that review. Unlike the Niod one – Hylamide has a few shades available: transparent, golden tan, and dark tan which would be better for darker skin tones as the ‘transparent’ one may not blend into the skin as well. Also, the name is a little confusing as they used the word foundation – the product is NOT your typical foundation it is more like a luminous primer – you still need to apply foundation over the skin. NIOD – Photography Fluid

NIOD - photography fluid complete
NIOD – Photography Fluid Revew & Swatch

Price: $30 CAD
Size: 30 mL

Side stepping away from Sephora products I recently got into trying out photography fluids. These are products that you apply onto your skin and they create a reflective surface that reflects light in a way that allows your skin to look flawless in photos.

PACKAGING

The whole brand has a unique type of packaging that looks a lot like old school medical products. The photography fluid comes in a glass brown drop tip bottle that looks clean and ‘vintage.’ I did find that there was a little bit of product buildup on the lip of the bottle from taking the dropper in and out. Luckily as I use up the product I have noticed that it is not much of an issue anymore. Overall, besides the product buildup during the first couple of uses the packaging is simplistic and convenient – unfortunately the glass bottle does make it less travel friendly but great otherwise.

PRODUCT

I will first explain what photography fluid is – it is priming fluid that incorporates ‘nano-prismatic’ particles that refract light and work to balance out the look of your skin tone and other imperfections. In essence it is a magical serum that makes your skin look amazing in photos. A couple of brands have created their own version and I have picked up this one and another from Hylamide.

The Noid Photography Fluid has a very liquidy and light weight consistency that smoothes onto the skin effortlessly. However, the liquidy texture does make spot application a little hard as it tends to slide around – however it is great for a quick all over the face application. The product blends smoothly over this skin – though I did notice a little bit of a patchiness – luckily I have noticed that patchiness does not affect the overall outcome too much (so a clean application is not entirely important). After a couple of tests I found it actually worked best for hiding dark circles and any hyper-pigmentation. As for fine lines and wrinkles it made a bigger difference on older skin (like my mother’s) in comparison to my own. Overall, this is a great product if you have an up coming event that will have a lot of photos being taken (ie. Weddings) as it will work to smooth out the appearance of your skin in photos. I have noticed the difference is not as noticeable in person – however it does provide a natural healthy glow to the skin that does work to make you appear more youthful. Do remember though that this product is NOT a skin care product that will fix imperfections it is merely just a ‘cover’ up product that will temporarily hide imperfections.

NARS – Sheer Glow Foundation

NARS - sheer glow foundation complete.jpg
NARS – Sheer Glow Foundation Review & Swatch

Price: $58 CAD
Size: 1.0 oz
Shade: Ceylan

PACKAGING

For the Nars Sheer Glow Foundation there is a definite pro and con for the packaging. Starting with the pros, the product comes in a glass bottle finished with simplistic labeling which gives it a nice touch. Looks and feel wise – the packaging is great. The con though is that the product does not come with a pump included. The packaging comes with 2 caps: a small twist off for the mouth of the bottle and a larger one to cover the first. Now I did do a little research and found that the pump is available in the US on the Nars website ($6 USD), unfortunately I do live in Canada and following my efforts to get a pump I came to the realization that it was just no worth it. So because there is no pump you are pretty much left to pour the foundation out on the back of your hand which always leads to either a mess or over pouring. Overall, the look and feel of the product is amazing unfortunately a pump for the foundation is not included making it ‘iffy’ for general daily use and traveling.

PRODUCT

My frustrations regarding the lack of a pump aside, the foundation has actually become my staple for a dewy look. The product has a buildable medium coverage that has a dewy/glowly finish. The foundation therefore keeps your skin hydrated making it great for normal to dry skin types. Also because of the dewy finish the foundation helps to make your skin look brighter and illuminated which in turn helps to make your skin look healthy and youthful. The foundation does need to be set as it may slide around without powder however if done with the right product it will not look cakey. Before powder the texture will feel moist to the touch but definitely not sticky which is good. As for longevity the foundation (if set with powder) sits well throughout the day, it does not fall into fine lines (granted you have used a primer). Personally, though it was a dewy finish I did not find the need to powder through the day and the product did not look or feel oily at the end but this all depends on your skin. Side note: I did find that around my 6th hour of wear the product started to fade around my nose a little but nothing too significant. Lastly, the shade I purchased has a yellow undertone and matched my skin almost perfectly, they also have a large and diverse selection of shade that covers a good range. Overall, this is a great foundation for achieving a dewy or glowy look. It has a decent and buildable coverage that is great for daily makeup and even heavier makeup days. Besides the fading in small area on my face near the end of the day the product wears pretty well and does not feel greasy or oily.

Tip: for a smooth and flawless application use a beauty blender and set the foundation thoroughly with powder.

Also to see the product on – check my instagram @signedbysl – I am using this foundation in a majority of the pictures.

YVES SAINT LAURENT – Touche Eclat Blur Primer

YSL - touche eclat blur primer complete.jpg

As we slowly move away from colour correctors, I wanted to talk about a product that I have had for a while now but have only gravitated to a lot more recently.

Price: $55 CAD
Size: 1.0 oz

PACKAGING

In good old YSL fashion, the product comes in a beautiful and elegant packaging. The product comes in a solid glass bottle with a gold finished plastic pump and cap. The labels are clean, simple, and luxurious and make this product a great looking piece for your makeup collection. A couple of down sides would be that the cap slides off pretty easily and that the glass makes the product not the best to travel with. Overall, the size and function of the packaging is great, the aesthetic and feel are luxurious, but it is not a travel friendly product.

PRODUCT

This primer is a little on pricey end, on the surface – however if you look at the price from a unit/$ amount it actually turns out to be on par with the Benefit Porefessional primer. The primer is a little interesting as it comes with flecks of gold glitter which are supposed to provide a luminous look to the skin however; the specks are a little large to provide a natural looking glow in comparison to what a shimmer would do. The glitters also tend to fall off and go unnoticed after the rest of the makeup gets applied. As for its blurring effectiveness I found that it did do a little bit but was not that significant and did very little to blur stronger imperfections. However, this primer wins in my books because if its extremely, now it mean EXTREMELY silky texture! The product smoothes onto the skin effortlessly and leaves the most smooth and silky feeling that makes the skin feel soft and plump. The primer does feel like a silicone based primer however it does not leave little silicone bits when smoothing it into the skin. This texture does contribute to filling in fine lines and pores which allow your makeup to look flawless on your skin. I would recommend the primer for regular day time makeup as it give your skin a smooth texture that looks natural and beautiful. I personally, have used it under higher makeup applications and have not found any issues however, I do foresee it not working well as it creates a very slippery surface that may not allow makeup to cling onto well. A trick I have used with – not only this primer – is mixing the primer I used on my face into the foundation I am applying as it allows the product to blend with each other better. This technique may minimize the slipping and sliding of your makeup products and with help your foundation look less cakey. Overall, the texture of this product is amazing – it allows your skin to look naturally smooth and silky. There are gold flecks that I did not find did anything significant however, the product works really well for your daily makeup routine and gives your skin an amazing look.

MARC JACOBS BEAUTY – Cover(t) Stick Color Corrector

marc jacobs - covert stick bright now complete
MARC JACOBS BEAUTY – Cover(t) Stick Color Corrector Review & Swatch

Price: $52 CAD
Size: 0.56 oz
Shade: Bright Now

PACKAGING

The color corrector comes in an interesting packaging, it reminds me of deodorant packaging. It is a white hard plastic, palm size stick with a swivel on the bottom that pushes the product up. The cap lightly clicks into place, but the extremely smooth surface makes it a little hard to remove the cap. I recommend holding onto the black swivel and pulling on the top while applying slight pressure. The swivel works smoothly and I have not had any complications. Lastly, the size and shape makes this colour correct a little less travel friendly than others. Overall, the look and feel of the packaging is amazing, besides the minor struggle when removing the cap, the packaging is unique and keeps the product safe.

PRODUCT

This colour corrector is a little different from others on the market. First, would be its skinny oval shape which works great for going over high points on the cheek. However, it makes reaching and targeting smaller areas a little more difficult as it is a little awkward to work with. Second, would be its texture/consistency, which is cream but also a powder. When you apply it to the skin it smoothes on like a cream, however when you use your fingers to blend it out it feels like a powder to the touch. This creamy powder texture makes the product feather light and blends easily into the skin. The texture also does not crease like creamy products would, which minimize the need to set the product with powder. As for pigmentation the product has light to medium pay off. The products are also a ‘hybrid’ style corrector which means that they have combined 2 types of correctors into one product. So they go as follows

Bright Now: pink and lilac = dullness & dark circles

Co(vert) Affairs: citron and lime = redness

Getting Warmer: peach and caramel = hyperpigmentation

Overall, the texture is the highlight of this product as it is a creamy powder that does not require setting powder. It blends and smooths onto the skin effortlessly and provides your skin with a light and natural correction. It lasts a good majority of the day and is weightless on the skin all while avoiding seeping into fine lines. On the down side because it is a stick like format it makes delivering the product to spot correct a little difficult without a brush. It is more of a medium to large area colour corrector. These things aside it is a fairly easy product to use and would be a great introductory product to color correction.

SHADE

BRIGHT NOW

This shade is a combination of pinks and purples which work great to combat dullness in the skin. Its pigmentation is light which works to give you a natural brightening effect. This unfortunately was not strong enough to combat my dark circles however, it worked great on points I wanted to bring out, like the high points of my face (ex. cheeks and forehead).

SMASHBOX – Color Correcting Stick

smashbox - colour correcting stick complete
SMASHBOX – Colour Correcting Stick (Get Less Red) Review & Swatch

Price: $27 CAD
Size: 0.12 oz
Shade: Get Less Red (Green)

PACKAGING

The product comes in a sleek plastic ‘pencil’ form which makes storing and travel easy. The plastic material is also a plus because sharpening tends to become messy with wood like material, this way the sharpening scraps come off cleanly and in one piece. The product also includes an appropriately size sharpener, which works great. Overall, the packaging is simple and clean, stores easily and sharpens cleanly.

PRODUCT

The colour corrector is a creamy formula that glides extremely smoothly onto the skin. It also applies the perfect amount onto the skin; a light thin layer that is buildable and light weight. As for pigmentation the product is highly pigmented and requires little to no effort to make a difference on red areas. The creamy formula blends well into the skin and your foundation however it does not set as quickly as I would wish. This does allow the product to move around if not set by powder. However, when it is fully blended out it does turn into a slight powdery texture which gives the product its smooth feel. Unfortunately, because of its stick formula I would only recommend this product to be used as a spot corrector (acne spots or around the nose) and not a corrector for larger areas. Overall, this product is great for spot correction as it is easy to apply and blends into the skin smoothly. However, it does need to be set with powder if you do not want the product to slip and slide around.
