GIORGIO ARMANI – Luminous Silk Foundation

GIORGIO ARMANI – Luminous Silk Foundation (4) Review & Swatch

Price: $68 CAD
Size: 30 mL
Shade: 4 (light skin with golden undertone)

This foundation is extremely popular among beauty gurus on the internet however, for $68 I really could not justify the purchase for a while. So when the Sephora discount came along I thought I would pick it up and give it a try – and here are my thoughts! Also, I wanted to mention that Giorgio Armani has a couple of foundations in different formulas and this review is just on the luminous silk formula.

PACKAGING

The foundation comes in a clean and luxurious packaging (which I expect at this price). The bottle is a matte glass with a plastic cap and pump. The look and feel are great however considering the price – it really does not blow me away. Functionally the pump is alright as it displaces a good amount of product, not too much not too little. However a tiny bit of product gets left over at the mouth of the pump and over time it creates a little clump of product – which is not the most fun thing to happen to such an expensive product. Overall, the look and feel did feel luxurious however the picky side of me hoped for a little more – however, product does gather at the pump which eventually creates a little bit of a mess and makes your product look dirty.

PRODUCT

To break down my review I will talk about the foundation’s application, formula, pigmentation, colour, and longevity (in this order). For application the product applies smoothly and blends out seamlessly with a beauty blender, brush, and even your fingers. The foundation is really easy use and applies a lot like a serum; it does not streak or slide around and smooths onto the skin quite flawlessly. The formula sits between a ‘watery’ foundation and liquid foundation – so for comparison it sits between the YSL fusion ink foundation and the Nars sheer glow which are both my all time favourites. This makes the formula extremely lightweight and comfortable to wear while still maintaining a slight dewy finish. With this said the pigmentation is definitely on the sheer and light – medium side so it acts a lot like a boost for your skin to help it look ‘naturally flawless’.  It will even out your skin tone but will not cover darker spots like acne or dark circles. This makes this foundation great for day to day use however; I would opt for a heavier coverage foundation if you are going for an event and want that higher coverage. For the colour selection the shade I choose turned out to be perfect for my skin’s yellow undertone. The selection is good but – not as extensive as Make Up For Ever. Just a heads up, do go into a store and swatch the foundations as I noticed the photos online are not very accurate but the descriptions are good. Lastly, the foundation (if set with powder) lasts great throughout my commute and work day (~12 hrs) including walking through snowy and rainy weather. Even by the end of the day the foundation still feels great without being greasy or dry and that’s without any touch-ups (extra powder or setting spray) throughout the day. Overall, the product really did surprise me as I went in thinking the product cant be ALL THAT but I have tested it out through long hours and long walks in the snowfall and it seems to still look and feel great by the end of the day. The foundation formula did wow me and I have been using it on a daily basis however – its more of a day to day foundation and not an event kind of foundation (personally speaking). With all this said, for $68 I am hesitant to say I would repurchase the foundation in a heartbeat as that is quite a bit for a foundation. On the plus side a little goes a long way so we will see how long it takes me to get through the bottle and judge it’s price based on that.

NARS – Sheer Glow Foundation

NARS - sheer glow foundation complete.jpg
NARS – Sheer Glow Foundation Review & Swatch

Price: $58 CAD
Size: 1.0 oz
Shade: Ceylan

PACKAGING

For the Nars Sheer Glow Foundation there is a definite pro and con for the packaging. Starting with the pros, the product comes in a glass bottle finished with simplistic labeling which gives it a nice touch. Looks and feel wise – the packaging is great. The con though is that the product does not come with a pump included. The packaging comes with 2 caps: a small twist off for the mouth of the bottle and a larger one to cover the first. Now I did do a little research and found that the pump is available in the US on the Nars website ($6 USD), unfortunately I do live in Canada and following my efforts to get a pump I came to the realization that it was just no worth it. So because there is no pump you are pretty much left to pour the foundation out on the back of your hand which always leads to either a mess or over pouring. Overall, the look and feel of the product is amazing unfortunately a pump for the foundation is not included making it ‘iffy’ for general daily use and traveling.

PRODUCT

My frustrations regarding the lack of a pump aside, the foundation has actually become my staple for a dewy look. The product has a buildable medium coverage that has a dewy/glowly finish. The foundation therefore keeps your skin hydrated making it great for normal to dry skin types. Also because of the dewy finish the foundation helps to make your skin look brighter and illuminated which in turn helps to make your skin look healthy and youthful. The foundation does need to be set as it may slide around without powder however if done with the right product it will not look cakey. Before powder the texture will feel moist to the touch but definitely not sticky which is good. As for longevity the foundation (if set with powder) sits well throughout the day, it does not fall into fine lines (granted you have used a primer). Personally, though it was a dewy finish I did not find the need to powder through the day and the product did not look or feel oily at the end but this all depends on your skin. Side note: I did find that around my 6th hour of wear the product started to fade around my nose a little but nothing too significant. Lastly, the shade I purchased has a yellow undertone and matched my skin almost perfectly, they also have a large and diverse selection of shade that covers a good range. Overall, this is a great foundation for achieving a dewy or glowy look. It has a decent and buildable coverage that is great for daily makeup and even heavier makeup days. Besides the fading in small area on my face near the end of the day the product wears pretty well and does not feel greasy or oily.

Tip: for a smooth and flawless application use a beauty blender and set the foundation thoroughly with powder.

Also to see the product on – check my instagram @signedbysl – I am using this foundation in a majority of the pictures.

MAKE UP FOR EVER – Ultra HD Invisible Cover Stick Foundation

make up for ever - hd invisible cover stick foundation complete
MAKE UP FOR EVER – Ultra HD Invisible Cover Stick Foundation Review & Swatch

MAKE UP FOR EVER – Ultra HD Invisible Cover Stick Foundation
Price: $50 CAD
Size: 0.44 oz
Shade: 120 = Y245 Soft Sand

Recently I was watching a lot of NikkieTutorials on Youtube and loved how this foundation looked on her so I went and purchased one for myself.

PACKAGING

The foundation comes in a thick plastic ‘stick’ much like a lipstick it twists up and down. The casing is solid black with a clear top so you can see which shade it is. The cap clicks into place when closed which is always a plus and closes pretty tightly so chances of the cap falling off is low. Overall, the packaging is travel friend, comes in a good side, and has a cap that clicks well into place. (Also because it is creamy it will not leak all over your makeup bag).

PRODUCT

The foundation is a creamy stick formula that makes application easy. You can apply the product to the specific area you want and blend it out lightly. Because of the stick formulation I found that you can slightly contour your face with these sticks just by applying a darker shade to the outer area of your face and the lighter in the inner portion. The foundation’s creamy texture makes it stick well to the skin and therefore does not slide around during blending making it a high coverage. The foundation is also quick and easy to use – it applies smoothly and blensds out quickly (however I do recommend that you use a beauty blending and not a brush to blend this product). Though it is a high coverage foundation the product did not dry out my skin or become oily. Also it lasts the whole day and stays relatively put without any touch ups. On the down side I would say that this foundation is not a ‘natural’ looking foundation and is not for day to day use or a ‘no make’ makeup look (if that is what you prefer). The foundation is more of an instagram or  photo friendly foundation as it looks great in photos. Overall, I recommend this product if you like a high coverage that does not look overly cakey. It also is pretty comfortable on the skin for how thick it is and wears great throughout the day but is definitely a foundation I would only use for photos or a higher ‘glam’ or heavy makeup day.

**side note I purchased the shade Soft Sand and found that the foundations do run slightly lighter than what they look like in the tube. They especially do not look as dark as they do online so I would recommend going to the store and getting colour matched before purchasing. Besides that the range of colours are decent and I was able to find one with a yellow undertone.

YVES SAINT LAURENT- Le Teint Encre de Peau

ysl liquid foundation complete
YVES SAINT LAURENT – Le Teint Encre de Peau Review

Price: $65 CAD
Size: 0.84 oz
Shade: BD 40 Golden Beige

PACKAGING

The packaging of YSL products are always luxurious and sleek – this foundation definitely is nothing short of that. The foundation comes in a square shaped glass bottle paired with a plastic but gold covered top. Aesthetically it is beautiful, clean, and simple. Functionality wise it has a plastic stick that is attached to the inner cap with a raindrop shape which works as the applicator. Personally, for a product that is priced at $64 I would prefer if there was a better way to access the product because this is not the most sanitary. For example a dropper or something similar would maybe be a little more sanitary and hygienic. Overall, the packaging is great, though it is a glass it does not feel fragile and I have thrown it into my makeup bag and travelled with it and have had no problems (leakage or breakage).

PRODUCT

Briefly put the foundation is a liquid formula that dries matte and carries a low to medium coverage. It is extremely light weight and I recommend this foundation or similar kinds for those who do not like the feel of liquid foundation on their face. For application the product applies and blends smoothly and seamlessly. It sets into a matte finish quickly and feel weightless on the skin. I have tested the application with a beauty blender, brush, and my fingers and found that all had great results but would say a brush or beauty blender would be the best way to go. I personally like that the product is so thin therefore not a lot of product is needed to cover the whole face and one bottle has lasted me quite long. For the wear of the product I have found that it looks natural and light (great for a ‘no makeup’ – makeup look). It also does not settle into lines even without the addition of powder. HOWEVER I found that it did not live up to its claims of lasting up to 24 hours as I found that around certain area on my face the foundation would start to fade near the end of my day (without any touch-ups). Also because it has a light to medium coverage (which is build-able) it is not the best for photo shoot style pictures – but if it is just a casual selfie then it helps to make your skin look naturally and effortlessly flawless. Overall, this foundation has definitely become a staple in my everyday makeup routine because of its natural look and weightless feel. It is extremely comfortable to wear all day long and has a light to medium coverage that is buildable. However it does fade a little in my nose area near the end of my day and is not made for photo shoot style photography – but above all is an amazing day to day foundation.

SHADE

Shade wise I found that for light to medium tones there were a lot to choose from and a great selection (for light to medium toned skin) including different undertones therefore BD 40 was great for my yellow under toned skin. Unfortunately there is not much availability for darker skin tones as the darkest shade available is BD 65 Golden beige – I do hope they expand their line soon as this is an amazing product. SIDE NOTE: the shades do run a little lighter than what you see in the bottle so I would recommend swatching or testing the shade on your neck before purchasing.

HOURGLASS – ILLUSION HYALURONIC SKIN TINT

hourglass illusion hyaluronic tint complete
HOURGLASS – ILLUSION HYALURONIC TINT REVIEW

HOURGLASS – Illusion Hyaluronic Tint
Price: $64
Size: 1.0 oz
Shade Purchased: Shell

I wanted to give a little intro on why I purchased this product because my review may or may not be slightly biased. I was initially looking for a bb cream style foundation that I could throw into my bag and apply to my face quickly before work. So I grabbed this product to try out for this purpose however, I have ended up returning it solely on the fact that it was not what I was looking for, not because it was not a good product.

INGREDIENT

Hyaluronic Acid: is an ingredient that is found in many hydrating skin care products. It is a molecule that is natural found in our skin and is known to hold onto moisture allowing the skin to remain hydrated.

PACKAGING

Packaging wise I would say I am 50/50 on it. The PROS regarding the packaging would be the tube style packaging that keeps the product sanitary and easy to squeeze out. It also has a luxurious looking cap that clicks well into place when closed – which is good if you are looking to throw this into your bag and do not want it to out. However, the CONS would be the tube’s material (I am being nitpicky) but it did not feel up to par with their other products and felt on the cheaper end. Also, the label on the tube was a sticker stuck on which could be a result of being sold in Canada and having to have English and French. But I would prefer to see the label officially printed straight onto the packaging especially if it is a $60 product.

PRODUCT

Simply put the product is great when used as a glowy and dewy foundation. It is meant to be a foundation that was formulated with hyaluronic acid to add a skin care element into the product. However, in my opinion was poorly marketed as a ‘tint’ giving me the feeling that it was going to be a ‘watery’ foundation or bb cream. The PROS of the product would be the light weight feeling when applied correctly and a subtle glowy and dewy finish. It gives the skin a nice healthy look when compared to matte finish products. The foundation does help to keep the skin hydrated however you would still need to apply your skincare routine. This is because it helps to maintain the hydration instead of provide hydration. I found that the best and in my opinion the only way to apply this product was in combination with a damp Beauty Blender. Also a plus would be the shade availability – it comes in a large spectrum which is rare for ‘tint’ or bb cream products. The CONS would be its thicker cream like consistency that makes the product hard to blend and spread with a brush or your fingers. The most unfortunate part is that it feels a little cakey if applied without a damp Beauty Blender which could lead to a greasy feeling as it does have a dewy finish. Also, the shade I picked up (which would be my fault) had a white undertone which does not match well with my skin as I am yellow undertoned. Lastly, the product though a creamy texture – has a sheer to light coverage and may not be favourable for those looking for a product have a medium to high coverage. Also, the product has a smell that I am also unsure about as it does not smell bad but it does not smell good. It reminds a little of older style makeup which some of you may or may not like.

OVERALL

The product is not a total disappointment however it is not a new favourite as I do have higher expectation for a product that is priced at $64. I will say that the finish is a beautiful natural dewy finish with a slight pearlescent look. It definitely gives the skin a beautiful glow that does not feel greasy or overwhelming (just remember to apply with a Beauty Blender). However, it is a little thick in consistency for my personal preference which does make the product hard to spread/blend without a damp sponge. I would recommend this product if you are looking for a foundation that keeps your skin hydrated especially through the winter months and only need a light to medium coverage.

ETUDE HOUSE – Precious Mineral Any Cushion SPF50+/PA+++

etude house - precious mineral any cushion complete

Price: $18.00 (on their website)
Size: 0.52 oz
Shade: Natural Beige W13

PACKAGING
I really like how clean and simple the packaging is, it comes as a compact with a section to separate the puff and the product. This keeps the puff clean and prevents the product from drying out. My favourite part would be that the product section is removable and replaceable. Meaning that when you run out of the product, you simply only need to purchase the refill which is sold on their site for $10.00 (click here for link). Lastly, it closes securely with a reassuring click, so you know that you have closed it properly and tightly to prevent the product from drying out.  Overall, I feel that the packaging of this product is well designed and makes it affordable, due to available refill sections.

PRODUCT
I will talk about the foundation and puff provided separately as I have different opinions on both.
FOUNDATION

The foundation is a lot like a BB cream, it claims to carry the following functions: brightening, wrinkle reducing, sebum control, and flawless coverage. I personally found that it lived up to a majority of those claims, I found that it brightened my complexion, blurred fine lines, and looked flawless on the skin. However, I would not say that this fully controls sebum as the finish is more or less a slightly dewy finish that I could see unfitting for those with very oily skin. On this note, it is a very light foundation that felt barely there and very breathable and comfortable on the skin, perfect for those that are new to wearing makeup on a daily basis. Keep in mind though, it does contain SPF therefore when you touch your face it will feel slightly sticky/moist but not to a point where it is bothersome or will cause breakouts. Because of its slightly dewy feel, I find that it is not drying for my skin however I would not classify this as a moisturizing foundation. As for longevity – I would not call this a long lasting foundation, but it seem to hold up relatively well for about 5-6 hours before noticeable fading. Luckily it blends well into the skin therefore fading will not be too noticeable. On the down side, it is only available in 3 shades, as many BB creams are, and geared towards Asian skin tones, which is unfortunate. Also the product does carry a nice fragrance which could be viewed as negative or positive, as I am aware that some people would react to the fragrance in it, so keep that in mind if you tend to react to cosmetics with fragrance. Overall, this is a BB cream that carries a light – medium coverage with a feather light feel on the skin, which has easily become one of my top 5 foundations. I would recommend it for skin types that are normal – dry.
PUFF
The puff on the other hand was not terrible but did not blow me away. It did an OK job at distributing the product however in comparison to applying it with the Beauty Blender I feel as though it did not hold up. Therefore, I would highly recommend applying this with a Beauty Blender if you have one, but it is not necessary for a flawless finish as the puff does a relatively decent job.

TARTE – BB Tinted Treatment 12-Hour Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen

Price: $42.00 CAD/$12.00 CAD
Size: 1 oz/ 0.5oz
Product at SEPHORA

PACKAGING
The BB Tinted Treatment has 2 different sizes. There is the regular and the travel size, the packaging for both are similar except for the caps. Both come in a matte tube with a simple design, due to its matte packaging I did find that it was easily dirtied but can also be easily cleaned. As for the caps the regular size comes with a bamboo cap giving it a sleek look in comparison to the more regular plastic cap that come with the travel size. As for usage, I did not find any difficulty or complications in retrieving product; however since it is a tube I will not be able to get all 100% of the product out. Overall, I love the look and functionality of the packaging and find it a suitable size for travels.

PRODUCT
This was definitely one of those products that I knew I had to have after I swatched it. It has a very smooth and velvety texture to it that smoothes and blends into the skin beautifully and easily. The coverage is a light – medium coverage which I find is great for a natural look and sets to a matte finish that I did not find drying. Also a lot of product is not needed to cover the whole face and it feels smooth and velvety on the skin. As for longevity, it lasts throughout a full day of traveling in the sun without feeling greasy and setting into my fine lines. I must also note that it contains SPF 30 yet does not have the greasy and oily feeling many product have when they contain SPF. As for colour availability the regular size comes in 5 shades and the travel size only comes in 2 which I find is plenty for a BB product. For my skin tone I use the light shade and use the medium shade in the contours of my face and it blends in quite seamlessly. As for negatives I did not feel it was much of a treatment, I found that it did little for my skin however I find it is more of a tinted primer or a matte foundation. Also I find the prices a little confusing as the travel size is exactly 1/2 of the full size yet it costs less than half of the regular size. Overall, I really recommend this product for summer time or when you are on vacation, it feels great on the skin all day and looks natural in photos. Also since it is such a great texture and sets matte there is no need for setting powder which allows you to bring and wear less product on travels.
