PACKAGING
The packaging of YSL products are always luxurious and sleek – this foundation definitely is nothing short of that. The foundation comes in a square shaped glass bottle paired with a plastic but gold covered top. Aesthetically it is beautiful, clean, and simple. Functionality wise it has a plastic stick that is attached to the inner cap with a raindrop shape which works as the applicator. Personally, for a product that is priced at $64 I would prefer if there was a better way to access the product because this is not the most sanitary. For example a dropper or something similar would maybe be a little more sanitary and hygienic. Overall, the packaging is great, though it is a glass it does not feel fragile and I have thrown it into my makeup bag and travelled with it and have had no problems (leakage or breakage).
PRODUCT
Briefly put the foundation is a liquid formula that dries matte and carries a low to medium coverage. It is extremely light weight and I recommend this foundation or similar kinds for those who do not like the feel of liquid foundation on their face. For application the product applies and blends smoothly and seamlessly. It sets into a matte finish quickly and feel weightless on the skin. I have tested the application with a beauty blender, brush, and my fingers and found that all had great results but would say a brush or beauty blender would be the best way to go. I personally like that the product is so thin therefore not a lot of product is needed to cover the whole face and one bottle has lasted me quite long. For the wear of the product I have found that it looks natural and light (great for a ‘no makeup’ – makeup look). It also does not settle into lines even without the addition of powder. HOWEVER I found that it did not live up to its claims of lasting up to 24 hours as I found that around certain area on my face the foundation would start to fade near the end of my day (without any touch-ups). Also because it has a light to medium coverage (which is build-able) it is not the best for photo shoot style pictures – but if it is just a casual selfie then it helps to make your skin look naturally and effortlessly flawless. Overall, this foundation has definitely become a staple in my everyday makeup routine because of its natural look and weightless feel. It is extremely comfortable to wear all day long and has a light to medium coverage that is buildable. However it does fade a little in my nose area near the end of my day and is not made for photo shoot style photography – but above all is an amazing day to day foundation.
SHADE
Shade wise I found that for light to medium tones there were a lot to choose from and a great selection (for light to medium toned skin) including different undertones therefore BD 40 was great for my yellow under toned skin. Unfortunately there is not much availability for darker skin tones as the darkest shade available is BD 65 Golden beige – I do hope they expand their line soon as this is an amazing product. SIDE NOTE: the shades do run a little lighter than what you see in the bottle so I would recommend swatching or testing the shade on your neck before purchasing.
